How long does it take to build a pool in Raleigh, NC? A week-by-week timeline from design to first swim, plus what causes delays and how to avoid them.

The Complete Pool Building Timeline: What to Expect in Raleigh, NC

How Long Does It Take to Build a Pool in Raleigh?

"When can we swim?" It's the question every homeowner asks first. The honest answer: a custom gunite pool in Raleigh typically takes 12 to 20 weeks from breaking ground to your first swim. Fiberglass pools are faster at 3 to 6 weeks.

Here's a detailed breakdown of each phase so you know exactly what to expect.

The Complete Pool Construction Timeline

Phase 1: Design & Consultation (2 – 4 Weeks)

This is where your pool comes to life on screen before it comes to life in your backyard.

What happens:

  • Initial on-site consultation and property survey
  • Concept development and 3D design renderings
  • Material selections (finish, tile, coping, decking)
  • Equipment specification (pump, filter, heater, automation)
  • Detailed proposal and contract finalization

Timeline factor: This phase can take longer if you're refining the design, and that's perfectly fine. Rushing the design leads to regret.

Phase 2: Permits & Engineering (2 – 6 Weeks)

What happens:

  • Structural engineering drawings completed
  • Building, electrical, and plumbing permit applications submitted
  • City of Raleigh plan review (5–15 business days typical)
  • Any required revisions addressed and resubmitted
  • Utility locates and HOA approvals (if applicable)

Timeline factor: Spring submissions take longer due to volume. We recommend starting the design process in fall or winter to have permits in hand for a spring groundbreaking.

Phase 3: Excavation (2 – 5 Days)

This is the most dramatic day of the build — heavy equipment transforms your backyard.

What happens:

  • Layout and staking of the pool footprint
  • Excavation of the pool bowl, spa, and any water features
  • Soil removal or redistribution on-site
  • Rough grading around the pool area

Timeline factor: Rock deposits (common in western Wake County) can add 1–3 days. Tight backyard access may require smaller equipment and more time.

Phase 4: Steel & Plumbing (1 – 2 Weeks)

What happens:

  • Rebar steel framework installed per engineering specs
  • Plumbing lines and pool drains set in place
  • Equipment pad poured and plumbing stubbed
  • City inspection: steel and plumbing rough-in

Timeline factor: Inspections must pass before moving to the next phase. Usually takes 1–3 days to get an inspector on-site.

Phase 5: Gunite / Shotcrete (1 – 2 Days)

The pool shell is formed in a single day — one of the most impressive phases.

What happens:

  • Gunite (dry mix) or shotcrete (wet mix) is pneumatically applied over the steel framework
  • Pool walls and floor take shape
  • Shell cures for 7–10 days with daily watering

Timeline factor: Weather dependent. Gunite cannot be applied in rain or freezing temperatures. We schedule around Raleigh's weather patterns.

Phase 6: Tile, Coping & Decking (2 – 4 Weeks)

This is where the pool goes from construction site to backyard resort.

What happens:

  • Waterline tile installation
  • Coping stones set around the pool edge
  • Paver or concrete decking installed
  • Any retaining walls or raised features built
  • Outdoor kitchen, fire features, and landscaping roughed in

Timeline factor: Material lead times can affect this phase. Selecting materials early in the design phase prevents delays.

Phase 7: Equipment & Electrical (3 – 5 Days)

What happens:

  • Pump, filter, heater, and salt system installed
  • Automation control panel set up
  • LED lighting wired and tested
  • Electrical bonding and GFCI protection completed
  • City inspection: electrical final

Phase 8: Interior Finish (3 – 5 Days)

What happens:

  • Pool surface applied (Pebble Tec, plaster, or aggregate)
  • Pool filling begins immediately after application
  • Water chemistry startup process initiated

Timeline factor: The pool must be filled within 24 hours of the finish application to prevent cracking.

Phase 9: Startup & Final Details (1 – 2 Weeks)

What happens:

  • Water chemistry balanced over 7–10 days
  • Equipment calibrated and tested
  • Automation systems programmed
  • Final inspection with the City of Raleigh
  • Comprehensive pool school (we teach you how to operate everything)
  • Final walkthrough and handoff

Total Timeline Summary

Phase Duration
Design & consultation 2 – 4 weeks
Permits & engineering 2 – 6 weeks
Excavation 2 – 5 days
Steel & plumbing 1 – 2 weeks
Gunite application 1 – 2 days + 7–10 day cure
Tile, coping & decking 2 – 4 weeks
Equipment & electrical 3 – 5 days
Interior finish 3 – 5 days
Startup & final 1 – 2 weeks
Total 12 – 20 weeks

What Causes Delays?

The most common delay factors in Raleigh:

  1. Weather — Extended rain or rare freeze events pause outdoor work
  2. Permit review backlogs — Spring submissions face the longest queues
  3. Material lead times — Custom tile or imported stone can take 4–8 weeks
  4. Rock removal — Unexpected rock during excavation
  5. Design changes mid-build — Change orders reset timelines
  6. How to Avoid Delays

    • Start design in fall or winter — Have permits ready for spring construction
    • Finalize material selections during design — Don't wait until the tile phase to pick tile
    • Lock your design before construction — Mid-build changes are costly and slow
    • Choose an experienced local builder — We know Raleigh's inspection schedules, soil conditions, and seasonal patterns
