The Story

Perched on a ridge in west Cary with panoramic sunset views, this property begged for an infinity edge. The engineering challenge was significant — cantilevering a vanishing edge over a 20-foot drop — but the result is a pool that appears to pour into the horizon every evening.

The Challenge

Building an infinity-edge pool on a hillside with a 20-foot grade drop required deep engineering for the catch basin, structural cantilever, and erosion control on the exposed slope below.

Our Solution

We designed a reinforced cantilever with helical piers anchored into bedrock. The catch basin was built into the hillside with a recirculating pump system, and the slope was stabilized with a planted retaining wall.

Site Assessment

A hilltop property with a dramatic westward slope and unobstructed sunset views. The grade drop made standard pool construction impossible.

Excavation

Excavation into the ridge with helical pier installation for the cantilever foundation. The catch basin was carved into the hillside below the vanishing edge.

Steel & Plumbing

Heavy-gauge rebar for the cantilevered edge, with dual recirculation plumbing — one for the main pool, one for the infinity catch basin.

Shotcrete Shell

The infinity wall required extra-thick shotcrete with waterproofing membrane. The catch basin shell was poured simultaneously to ensure structural bonding.

Tile & Coping

Dark-bottom tile to create a mirror effect reflecting the sky. The vanishing edge was finished with a knife-edge coping for a seamless water-to-horizon line.
