The Winterglow Pool

Heated pool with LED lighting, built for year-round use

The Story

Most pool owners close up for winter, but the Winterglow homeowners wanted to swim year-round. We built a heated pool with a high-efficiency heat pump, insulated plumbing, and a full-color LED system that turns winter nights into a glowing oasis.

The Challenge

Heating a pool efficiently in NC winters requires proper insulation, a correctly sized heat pump, and plumbing that won't freeze. Standard pool construction doesn't account for sub-freezing operation.

Our Solution

We insulated the shotcrete shell exterior with closed-cell foam, used insulated PVC for all exposed plumbing, and installed a variable-speed heat pump sized for the pool volume. Freeze protection automation shuts down if temps drop below 28°F.

Site Assessment

A standard suburban backyard in Raleigh. The homeowners wanted to swim through December — a pool engineered for cold weather from day one.

Excavation

Standard rectangular excavation with extra depth for the equipment vault. The heat pump pad was poured adjacent to the pool for short plumbing runs.

Steel & Insulated Plumbing

Rebar grid with closed-cell foam insulation applied to the exterior before backfill. All plumbing run in insulated PVC with heat trace on exposed sections.
